A short obituary on Leon Goldman the SKIFist.
On the 27th of May, Leon Goldman passed away after an 18 month battle with cancer.
Leon was the son of Esther and Shaul Goldman. Shaul Goldman who lived in pre-war Bialystok was a member of the Central Committee of the Bund in Poland.
Due to an extraordinary set of events Leon survived the Holocaust. Shaul Goldman was executed by Stalin on trumped up charges. However, as a result of his father’s execution, Esther Goldman, Leo
We recognise the deep moral and political significance of the Uluru Statement from the Heart in our own hearts. Jews have also experienced the deep silence that follows atrocity and genocide, the experience of being abandoned by humanity, the struggle for recognition of confronting truths, and the tormenting powerlessness of not being heard. In this year of 2020, which marks the 250th anniversary of the arrival of the British in Australia and dispossession of its original inh
To Members, Supporters and Friends, We take the health and wellbeing of our community and the broader community seriously. The COVID-19 pandemic is a challenge for all of us and we are determined to support our community and protect our most vulnerable members, especially those over 70 years of age. Bund and SKIF are suspending all in-person events until further notice Koleinu is a group which uses Waks House on Friday evenings. They have suspended these weekly events. We wil
A freylekhn ershter mai khaveyrim! As we celebrate May Day, we remember those that fought for the rights we benefit from today and the fight that early Bundistn played such a vital role in, in improving the lives of Jewish workers in Europe. We too must not forget those who still need someone to fight on their behalf. Below is a translated excerpt from “May Day in Russia,” Justice, 9th May 1908, p.3, with which we can remember the hardship experienced by those who came before
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, one of the most well known acts of resistance during the Holocaust, in which SKIF and the Bund members played active roles. While we, the Jewish Labour Bund and SKIF in Melbourne, observed this occasion with our annual commemoration at the Phoenix Theatre, official and unofficial ceremonies were being held in Warsaw and in other cities around the world. An unofficial ceremony was held at the Bund monument at
The Jewish Labour Bund is deeply disturbed by the Polish Government’s attempts to rewrite the history of the Holocaust. The latest insult is the new law that could be put into effect, which makes it an offence to accuse the Polish nation of committing atrocities against the Jewish people during the Holocaust. What is perhaps more disconcerting is the Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki’s response to criticism of the law, equating Polish and “Jewish perpetrators” during t
Julian Leeser’s flippant dismissal of First Australians’ concerns regarding the name and date of our national day is as instructive as it is offensive and nonsensical. It is completely in keeping with the mean-spirited rejection by the Liberal federal government of the ‘Uluru Statement from the Heart’ which emerged from the 2017 National Constitutional Convention. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the protest by William Cooper and the Australian Aboriginal League at the
A statement from the Coalition to Advance Multiculturalism Victoria’s diverse faith and multicultural communities are extremely concerned and disappointed by the media reporting, unhelpful statements by politicians and public debate surrounding youth crime in Victoria, which appears to target and make scapegoats out of the Victorian African community, and the South Sudanese community in particular. Our political leaders must understand that language is important and that we a
The Jewish Labour Bund and SKIF welcome the cancellation of the proposed address to the Jewish community by One Nation senators Pauline Hanson and Malcolm Roberts. Whilst we, as an organisation, value open debate, we stand firmly against the false and harmful statements made by the senators in question and by many who have supported this event. We find such derogatory statements to be harmful to our multicultural Australian society, which we hold so dear. The same freedom fro
The Jewish Labour Bund Inc. is appalled and alarmed by the cruelty and brutality of the Abbott Government's asylum seeker policies. They constitute a chilling abuse of human rights and are robbing asylum seekers of all hope and dignity. We are appalled at reports of men, women and children living in tents on Nauru in sweltering tropical heat, appalled at the conditions of the single man's camp, where 350 inmates with access to just four toilets, have reportedly been hit with
